Health
Public health in Brazil continues to be an issue of great importance to the government and
the people. With such a large disparity in wealth, it has been a challenge to create a
healthcare system that satisfies Brazil’s economically diverse residents. There is a large
discrepancy in healthcare norms across classes that will continue to be a struggle for the
country.
Though there is more work to be done, Brazil still boasts some of the most technologically
advanced hospitals and world-class medical professionals. In the past few decades there
have been major improvements in maternal health across the country, access to medication,
and life expectancy. According to World Health Organization, the leading causes of mortality
in Brazil are the same as in other developed nations: heart and cancer diseases. As Brazil
continues to grow, we will continue to see changes and improvements to their healthcare
system.
Vaccinations While in Brazil
For most regions of the country you don't need to worry about vaccinations. However, if you
travel to one of the following states Yellow Fever shots are necessary: Acre, Amazonas,
Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Rondônia, Amapá, and
Roraima.
For these regions vaccinations against Typhoid, Polio, and Malaria are also recommended.
Talk to your physician before any trips to these locations.
Insurance
Major insurance companies in Brazil offer a variety of plans, most of which can be obtained
through your employer. The most common forms of insurance are health and medical, and
life.
Health Insurance
Ask your employer about health insurance benefits during your stay in Brazil. Most likely
your company has a health plan that you will be able to join. Make sure that your health
insurance covers your needs when you return home for short visits and also when you return
home at the end of your assignment.
Life Insurance
Contact your life insurance company and ask about the effects your overseas posting may
have on your life, endowment, or annuity policies. Find out about options for premium
payments while you are in Brazil. Also find out if your life insurance company has a branch in
Brazil so that you can continue your policy.
Most Brazilian employers use a specific insurance company for their local employees and
