JOHAN JACOB BRUUN:

NOVU S ATLAS D AN LE , COPENHAGEN

1 7 6 1

The book was intended as the first of a series of volumes

covering the whole of the kingdom, but this project was

not realized either. W ith the exception of Jacob Lange-

baek's foreword the work only consists of views,

50

in all,

of which

18

are of Copenhagen. Bruun himself supplied

the prepatory drawings for all the engravings - nine of

these drawings can be seen in this exhibition (cat. nos.

68

-

), while cat. nos.

67

and

7 7

are engravings done

after drawings for this book, executed by Hans Qvist and

Jonas Haas.

ERIK PONTOPP IDAN :

DEN DANSKE ATLAS II, COPENHAGEN

1764

W ith Pontoppidan's Atlas the dream of a topographical

description of the whole country was realized, but the

originator of the project, Vice-Chancellor Erik Pontoppi-

dan, only managed to see two of the seven volumes come

out. Besides the exhaustive text this volume has

40

views

of Copenhagen of which

23

have been exhibited here (cat.

nos.

84

-

10 6

). The engravings were done by various artists,

and are usually of a rather poor quality - some of the

views relying on older sketches, for example by J. J. Bruun.

The work was re-issued in full with a genetic history by

Sv. Cedergreen Bech, Copenhagen
