4.2.2 Shot Put Progressions for the Standing Throw
Using a 600g primary shot a progressive action for the shot can be taught by doing a ‘put’ from the
kneeling position. It should be noted that without being told the young athlete will normally place
the opposite leg forward and knee up to the putting arm.
After the young athlete has ‘put’ from the kneeling position several times, he or she can then
progress to a basic position for a standing ‘put’. The young athlete stands up from the kneeling
position and pulls the rear leg closer to the front leg as in the following illustration and performs
this basic standing ‘put’.
