Ellis Island is an island that is
located in Upper New York It
was the gateway for millions
of immigration to the United
States as the nation’s busiest
immigrant inspection station
from 1892 until 1954.
Bay in the Port of New York
and New Jersey. The island
was made part of the Statue of
Liberty National Monument in
1965, and has hosted a museum
of immigration since 1990. It
is a place where visitors can
spend hours learning about Ellis
Island’s history before, during,
and after its use as America’s
immigration station.
The museum also tells the
stories of why so many people
immigrated to America. Ellis
Island has become a place
where families and individuals
celebrate and honor those
family members who made the
arduous journey to a new life in

The Statue of Liberty is
a colossal neoclassical sculpture
on Liberty Island in NewYork
Harbor in NewYork City.
The copper statue, designed by
Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi , a
French sculptor, and dedicated on
October 28, 1886,was a gift to
the United States from
the people of France.
The statue was constructed
in France, shipped overseas in
crates, and assembled on the
completed pedestal on what was
then called Bedloe’s Island.
The statue is of a robed female
figure representing Libertas,
the Roman Goddess,who bears
a torch and a tabula ansta (a
tablet evoking the law) upon
which is inscribed the date of
the American Declaration of
Independence,July 4, 1776.
A broken chain lies at her feet.
The statue is an icon of freedom
and of the United States:
a welcoming signal to immigrants
arriving from abroad.

Liberty State Park is located on
Upper New York Bay in Jersey
City, New Jersey, opposite
Liberty Island and Ellis Island.
The LIBERTYWALK promenade
graces the eastern edge of
Liberty State Park, and is a 1.3
mile stroll from the park office
and Statue of Liberty overlook
to the partially restored CRRNJ
Terminal. During the 19th
and early 20th centuries, after
being greeted by the Statue of
Liberty and processed at Ellis
Island immigrants purchased
tickets and boarded trains, at the
CRRNJ Terminal, that took them
to their new homes throughout
the United States. The Terminal
served these immigrants as the
gateway to the realization of
their hopes and dreams of a new
life in America.
