I am delighted to welcome you back to the Porsche
European Open, an event which boasts such a rich
history and made a hugely successful return to the
European Tour schedule last year, here at the golfing
haven of Golf Resort Bad Griesbach.
Thongchai Jaidee added his name to the prestigious
list of former winners of this event last time out, the
Thai proving on the final day that he was a
champion worthy of joining the likes of
Darren Clarke, Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle,
Greg Norman and Ian Woosnam on
the famous trophy.
We are a tour which is constantly
evolving and bringing this great
tournament to Germany, and indeed
continental Europe, for the first time
turned out to be a fantastic move.
Thanks to the dedicated work of every-
body involved, it was truly an occasion to
remember.
We look forward to an even bigger and better event
this week and we are extremely thankful for the
support of title sponsor Porsche, whose first foray
into golf sponsorship last year gave me massive
encouragement that this is the beginning of a long
and fruitful relationship.
We are delighted also to be working once again with
Dominik Senn and his team at 4sports & Entertain-
ment AG, who put on such a superb show here twelve
months ago while also bringing their knowledge and
expertise to the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul
Lawrie Match Play for the last two years.
It was a real pleasure to take such a prestigious
tournament to what is Europe’s largest golf resort,
and thanks to the hard work and dedication of
Hans Dieter Cleven, the majority owner of Hartl Resort,
and his team, it truly lived up to the billing.
Golf tournaments are first and foremost about the
fans and, with Martin Kaymer making his debut this
year alongside a very strong field, while the build-up
to The Ryder Cup continues, it is sure to be a
magnificent occasion for the German spectators.
