Validity of a Brief.
SOLICITORS INSTRUCTING SOLICITORS.
The Times
of 25th January, 1913, states
that
in
the
City
of
London Court
before
Judge Rentoul,
the question of
Solicitors appearing for other Solicitors in
County Courts again came up for discussion.
His Honour took exception to the appear
ance of Mr. Ronald Taylor, a Solicitor, of
Walbrook, on behalf of Messrs. Rawlings and
Butt, Solicitors, for a client in an accident
case. He said it was improper for one Soli
citor to be briefed by another. He had taken
exception to the practice years ago.
Mr. Taylor said he had been articled to
Messrs. Rawlings and Butt and was now in
practice for himself, and when they were
busy in five or six Courts the same day
they asked him to conduct one of the cases.
There was an arrangement between them by
which he did their County Court work in
Courts. He understood it was quite common
for city Solicitors who had cases in Brentford
County Court to send the papers down to
Solicitors who practised there locally to do
the cases.
Judge Rentoul said he would not allow it
in the City of London Court.
It was against
the law. Probably the Judge of the Brent
ford County Court did not know what was
going on. He would allow Mr. Taylor to
conduct the case in the circumstances ;
but
