Margin positivity and re excision rates

Tumour resection volumes may

be much higher with oncoplastic

techniques than standard BCS

Rezai, in a large series of 1035

oncoplastic cases, achieved

primary clear margins in 88%,

which compares favourably with

the UK figure of 60-80%.

Most studies report margin re

excision rates similar to those of

standard BCS

Systematic review

(Yiannakopoulou 2016) showed

rates varying between 0 and

36% (this being a DCIS only

series where margins are more

challenging) and generally

tending to be low.

This may reflect the increased

volume resection making it

easier to excise widely for

relatively large tumours
