Although it brought together

some of our best loved fairytale

characters, Stephen Sondheim and

James Lapine’s Broadway musical

hit was a deliciously dark affair,

notably short on happy endings.

Thankfully the House Of Mouse

has resisted the temptation to

Disney-fy things for the big screen

and this starry adaptation from

director Rob Marshall (

Chicago

)

largely stays true to the gothic

charms of the original. Cheerfully subverting the storylines

of several Brothers Grimm classics,

Into The Woods

centres on baker James Corden and wife Emily Blunt, who

must locate a golden slipper (Cinderella), a red cloak (Little

Red Riding Hood), a white cow (Jack and The Beanstalk)

and a lock of golden hair (Rapunzel) to lift a childless curse

put on them by a wicked witch (Meryl Streep). Like the

best fairytales – and Disney’s animated features for that

matter –

Into The Woods

should both enchant and scare

small children, while grown-ups will appreciate the witty

score, plus scene-stealing cameos from the likes of Johnny

Depp (who else but the Big Bad Wolf?) and Chris Pine, a

revelation as a shallow Prince Charming.

Happy ever after?

INTO THE WOODS

Kowalski – analysis? This film

is pretty flippin’ awesome.

Everyone’s favourite quartet of

penguins from DreamWorks’

Madagascar

get their own spin-

off feature which follows their

story from the very beginning.

Skipper (Tom McGrath),

Kowalski (Chris Miller), Private

(Christopher Knights) and Rico

(Conrad Vernon) reunite and fight

to save penguin-kind around the

world from evil cephalopod Dave (John Malkovich).

As expected, POM is rife with humour for both the

young and old(er). With puns like “Nicolas! Cage

them!” and “Hugh! Jack! Man the battle stations!”

you’ll be in fits of giggles while your children get lost

in the wonders of the exquisite animation. Even those

who aren’t fans of the

Madagascar

franchise will enjoy;

however, if you did love the previous films,

Penguins

of Madagascar

will only heighten your appreciation of

the tuxedo-wearing birds. Riding the tailcoats of that

other successful penguin movie

Happy Feet

, these

small black flappy critters can’t get any cuter.

Happy feet that like to move it, move it
