Once upon a time, thoughts of role-playing

games involved staid affairs with all the

action of a Merchant Ivory film. But then the

likes of

Skyrim

and From Software’s Souls

series changed things. Action was honed,

while keeping a core that involved the sort of

strategising and decision-making that you’d

never find in a pure arcade romp.

The Witcher

III: Wild Hunt

, based ever more loosely on the

writings of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski,

has sets it sights on running away with the

action RPG crown, and it makes a good case.

As the titular Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, you’re a

superhuman monster slayer for hire. In a world

that’s utterly riddled with monsters, this makes

you somebody who’s in high demand. It’s not

any old world, either, for it’s a big, wide, open

one that’s full of choices. You have amazing

freedom to explore, be it on land or sea – or

even undersea. From wastelands to small

towns and onwards to large cities, you ply your

trade, utilising magic, humour and devastating

(or otherwise) people skills, eradicating

monsters while acting upon your ultimate

quest, to track down an apparent living weapon

in the form of the “Child of Prophecy”. And

they all lived happily ever after...?
