IS THE NEW URSC PRESIDENT
Willie John is arguably Ulster’s most famous
rugby son having played for, with distinction,
and captained, with conviction, his club
Ballymena, his province Ulster and his
country Ireland. He also coached both the
Ulster and Ireland teams. However, he is
probably best known as the Captain of the
British and Irish Lions that in 1971 won the
test series against the All Blacks and three
years later skippered the Lions to their all
conquering tour of South Africa.
Willie John said, “I am honoured to be
President of the Ulster Rugby Supporters
Club... and realise I am trying to follow the
icon that was Jack Kyle.”
URSC Chairman Jonathan Bill, in welcoming
Willie John to his new role commented,
“We are delighted, privileged and humbled
that another living legend of the game we
love has agreed to be our President. Ulster
fans have always held Willie John close to
their hearts – he epitomised many of the
traits that Ulstermen (and women) hold
dear... plain speaking, hard working, brave,
generous and, of course, hugely talented –
all lightly worn, a natural leader who is proud
of his roots and remains close to those roots
to this day.”
Willie John’s first formal role as President of
the Ulster Rugby Supporters Club will be to
present the URSC Player of the Year award
for 2014/2015 at the Ulster Rugby Awards
Night sponsored by Heineken on Friday 1st
May 2015 at the Culloden Hotel.
The Ulster Rugby Supporters Club (URSC) is delighted to
announce that Willie John McBride MBE is to be its new
President, succeeding the late Jack Kyle in the role.
