adobe
—a building material made of mud and straw.
Amerindian
—a term for the indigenous peoples of North and South America
before the arrival of Europeans in the late 15th century.
conquistador
—any one of the Spanish leaders of the conquest of the Americas
in the 1500s.
criollo
—a resident of New Spain who was born in North America to parents of
Spanish ancestry. In the social order of New Spain, criollos ranked above
mestizos.
fiesta
—a Mexican party or celebration.
haciendas
—large Mexican ranches.
maquiladoras
—factories created to attract foreign business to Mexico by
allowing them to do business cheaply.
mariachi
—a Mexican street band that performs a distinctive type of music
utilizing guitars, violins, and trumpets.
Mesoamerica
—the region of southern North America that was inhabited before
the arrival of the Spaniards.
mestizo
—a person of mixed Amerindian and European (typically Spanish)
descent.
Nahuatl
—the ancient language spoken by the Aztecs; still spoken by many
modern Mexicans.
New Spain
—name for the Spanish colony that included modern-day Mexico.
This vast area of North America was conquered by Spain in the 1500s
and ruled by the Spanish until 1821.
plaza
—the central open square at the center of Spanish cities in Mexico.
pre-Columbian
—referring to a time before the 1490s, when Christopher
Columbus landed in the Americas.
