was caused by a massive volcanic implosion thousands of years ago. It destroyed
much of what was then one island, leaving in its place four islands: Santorini, Therasia,
Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni. This catastrophe explains why Santorini itself has such
sheer cliffs and why the islands form a circle.
