O
ur friends at The Ortho Practice dish up
their recommendations for the best food
to eat – and avoid – with braces.
The day has finally arrived – your braces are
on. You’re already dreaming about your final
appointment when suddenly you are hit with
the rule book of the dos and don’ts of looking
after your braces. As orthodontists we like to
consider these ‘rules’ as advice to patients for
taking care of their braces and teeth during
treatment. A big component of this advice is
diet. Immediately, you receive a list of foods
to completely avoid including, nuts, popcorn,
gum and hard and chewy confectionaries.
Most orthodontists strongly advise of steering
clear of sugary drinks too, as they increase
your risk of tooth decay.
Then there are the foods you have to
approach with caution. Apples and carrots
are recommended to be chopped into bite
sized pieces and corn to be eaten off the cob.
Chips are to be chewed carefully and one at
a time (even we agree that’s a tough one).
Pizza, bagels and even your favourite cut of
meat must be chewed carefully and slowly
to avoid damaging a bracket or wire. The last
thing you want to be doing is sitting back in
your orthodontist’s chair for yet another repair.
This is a costly exercise that could potentially
affect the length of your treatment time.
But what about the foods you can eat?
Soft and pureed foods are definitely popular,
especially after your braces have been
tightened. Soups and smoothies are a
delicious and clever way of consuming all
of those essential nutrients without the risk
of damaging your braces or getting food
stuck between your brackets. The choices
are endless when it comes to eating with
braces - yoghurts, quinoa and acai bowls
for breakfast, noodles and fritters for lunch,
pasta and seafood for dinner and of course,
ice cream for dessert. In fact, you can visit The
Ortho Practice’s blog for a long list of delicious,
braces-friendly recipes that are healthy and
simple to prepare.
