C

olour is what enhances an interior or

exterior, and selecting colour for your

home is a difficult process. People

may say oh... just go neutral. However,

it is important to make sure you get the

correct tones in that neutral, as this can be

the difference between walls looking like

cardboard, or those that flow and sit well with

furnishings, floorings and art work or exterior

surroundings.

Paint colour turns any room into a living

space, hides blemishes, raises or lowers the

ceiling, and sets a room’s mood.

Paint colours need to create an environment

that can be lived and worked in every day.

Trends in colour come and go, some faster

than others. But, what makes an interior look

current is using a mix of different furnishings,

and accessories.

It’s the colour combinations the eye sees

first.

If you are thinking of renovating your house

it is a great idea to start flicking through

magazines, looking on websites like Pintrest

and Instagram, blog sites etc., as these are all

good areas to research. A good starting point

on your creative journey, is when you see

something you like print it off or cut it out, and

create a mood board. This will show you the

style and colours that are appealing to you.

An important area to consider when

choosing a paint company, is your living

environment. Paints have what are known

as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in them.

These compounds are what you smell &

breath in, when paint is applied and is drying.

VOC’s contribute negatively to indoor air

quality through emissions, both during and

after curing. The lower the VOC the better for

all.

As a colour consultant I work with

the individual by suggesting options,

combinations and accents, but the final

choice will rest with the homeowner.
