Vagal Maneuvers
Clinical Indications:
 PSVT requiring conversion
Clinical Considerations:
 Vagal Maneuvers will not work on tachycardias originating in the atria (Afib/Aflutter)
 This protocol is for the Valsalva maneuver
Steps Performed?

1. Ensure the clinical indications are met ☐ ☐
2. Explain the need for the procedure to the patient ☐ ☐
3. Instruct the patient to:
 Inhale deeply
 Flex abdominal and chest muscles
 “Bear down” as if making a bowel movement or cough deeply
 Results are typically seen in 10-15 seconds

4. If the procedure is ineffective, wait 1 minute, obtain vital signs, and repeat step 3. ☐ ☐
5. Document the time and results of the procedure in the patient care report. ☐ ☐
