Vagal Maneuvers

Clinical Indications:

PSVT requiring conversion

Clinical Considerations:

Vagal Maneuvers will not work on tachycardias originating in the atria (Afib/Aflutter)

This protocol is for the Valsalva maneuver

Steps

1.

Ensure the clinical indications are met

2.

Explain the need for the procedure to the patient

3.

Instruct the patient to:

Inhale deeply

Flex abdominal and chest muscles

“Bear down” as if making a bowel movement or cough deeply

Results are typically seen in 10-15 seconds

4.

If the procedure is ineffective, wait 1 minute, obtain vital signs, and repeat step 3.

5.

Document the time and results of the procedure in the patient care report.
