The monkeys did not have their appetite and did not enjoy weight-
lessness. Bees didn’t mind at all. A colony of more than 3,000 bees
continued to build their hive as if they were on Earth.
Some fish were carried into space to see if animals could repro-
duce. These fish did just fine, which might mean a way to create food
sources on very, very long future flights.
Other scientists studied the effects of space on animals at the level
of cells or studied microorganisms that were brought aboard.
These tubes hold living fruit flies, which were among the many types of animals that have lived on
board the ISS. Scientists work with the animals to learn how they adapt to life in space.
