Dear Public Health Colleagues:
Welcome to APHA’s 2016 Annual Meeting and Expo. This year’s theme—“Creating the Healthiest
Nation: Ensuring the Right to Health”—emphasizes health as a fundamental human right. How
fitting that we are exploring this theme in Denver, the Mile-High City. One of America’s most
walkable and bikeable cities, Denver is a scenic beauty known as the unofficial capital of the
Rocky Mountain West. The city is rich in culture, outdoor activities and sports and consistently
ranks in the top 10 of America’s healthiest cities.
As we gather in Denver to share our work toward creating the healthiest nation, a highlight of
APHA 2016 is Sunday’s Opening General Session featuring:
• Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, one of our nation’s most important
advocates for the right to health; and
• APHA President Camara Jones, MD, PhD, who has crossed the nation speaking on the
importance of addressing racism as a national priority.
Our program is chock-full of exciting sessions and events, including:
• Our featured Special Sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday;
• A special General Session on Monday, from 4:30-6 p.m., entitled “CDC: Disease Detectives to the
World” and featuring current CDC Director Tom Frieden and three former CDC directors; and
• Wednesday’s Closing General Session where the presidents of ASTHO, NACCHO and APHA will
discuss their approaches to achieving health equity.
With this year’s meeting we also launch “APHA Live,” our new distance learning option. APHA
Live is an opportunity for people unable to join us in person to experience the richness of selected
Annual Meeting academic content from their computer screens.
Please avail yourself of the many outstanding intellectual opportunities provided at the Annual
Meeting, and enjoy the occasion to interact with friends and colleagues. Reinvigorate your passion
for public health. And, of course, allow time to refresh your spirit and enjoy the many attractions
of Denver.
Thank you for your participation in APHA 2016, and for your dedication to improving and protecting
public health.
