In 1908, Dr. Leal pioneered the first continuous
use of chlorine for drinking water disinfection
in Jersey City, NJ. His courageous experiment
virtually eliminated the scourge of typhoid fever
in Jersey City, paving the way for safer drinking
water everywhere. Come and learn more about
Dr. Leal’s contributions to public health history,
