Teijin donates
wastewater system for
disaster-hit NE Japan
Teijin Limited has donated a compact, efficient and energy-
saving municipal sewage processing system, based on the
company’s multi-stage activated biological process (MSABP)
technology, to the city of Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, as
a temporary replacement for the sewage treatment system
devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. This
is the first time that Teijin’s MSABP wastewater treatment
technology has been adopted for sewage treatment.
In the course of on-going efforts by the Japan Sewage Works
Agency (JS), a special public organisation funded by local
governments, to support the recovery of sewage-treatment
facilities in the earthquake-hit areas, Teijin’s MSABP-based
system was selected because of several advantages: the entire
system fits within a 40ft container for easy transportation;
start-up simply requires that tubing and wiring be connected
on-site; efficient processing capacity handles up to 75 tons of
sewage per day; and remaining sludge is limited, resulting in low
maintenance and energy savings.
In February 2011, Teijin and JS completed a pilot project
to verify the effectiveness of the system at JS’s Research
& Technology Development Experimental Center in Mooka,
Tochigi Prefecture. Teijin now looks forward to the system
proving its effectiveness on a practical basis, in support of the
disaster-struck area’s overall recovery.
The MSABP system uses special biological carriers packed with
high concentrations of microorganisms in multistage aeration
tanks. The microorganisms vary from tank to tank to form a food
chain that decomposes even highly concentrated and persistent
effluent. The system suppresses the generation of excess
sludge, eliminating the need for sludge disposal and resulting in
a low-maintenance solution that reduces energy consumption.
The system currently is being used for wastewater treatment in
chemical, dyeing and food manufacturing plants in Indonesia
and China. It has also been selected for wastewater treatment
by a textile factory in Angola.
