successful environmental management

of environmental aspects of risk; and

• concludes with the presentation of

industry ‘bad’ and ‘best’ practice as

identified through a collection of audit

photographs taken at member opera-

tions since 2012 through to 2016.

“Without exception, management and

employees who have attended the

training session have confirmed the

value-adding component of these ses-

sions that, in instances, are attended by

as many as 10 employees and trainees at

an operation,” Cluett says.

Physical inspection focuses on a selec-

tion of operational areas that have been

identified to present the highest risks of

non-compliance with legal requirement.

Due to limited time available on the day

of the audit, it is not possible to cover all

areas in detail. Focus is therefore placed

on diesel storage and handling, oil and

chemical storage, wash bays, wash water

and waste handling, salvage yards and

storage. Where possible, storm water,

overburden, topsoil and alien vegetation

are also covered.

He says significant improvements in

both practices and facilities have been

noted across the majority of operations,

with a number of these, presenting leading

industry practice in both SA and overseas.

“The Environmental Management

System Audit has, since 2012, shown sig-

nificant improvement in the quality and

coverage of the system documentation.

In the majority of cases, the documenta-

tion is world class and suitably addresses

the requirements of the ISO 14001:2004

EMS and the more comprehensive Aspasa

About Face requirements.

“It is quite clear that participation in

the Aspasa About Face programme has

significantly aided members in the envi-

ronmental policy commitment to contin-

ued improvement,” Cluett says.

“Perhaps,” he adds, “the most pleasing

observation for us as auditors is the very

apparent management and employee

buy-in to the need for, and benefits

of environmental stewardship at their

operations.”
