lovers! How can it be the
end of the year? It seems
mere weeks ago I was sweeping
Christmas gift wrapping off the floor
and heading to the beach for some
deserved r&r, before heading back
into the summer music fray. But, the
bearded guy in the red suit is back,
and with him comes summer. Well
for me, summer has already started.
I fulfilled a lifelong ambition and saw
The Rolling Stones
in Melbourne
– luckily just before Mick Jagger’s
voice packed up (an event causing
no end of woe to
STACK
staff, who
were primed to see the band at
Hanging Rock – we all know what happened to
THAT). Recently I also caught
The Hilltop Hoods
at new venue Margaret Court Arena – they really
are one of the country’s most dynamic live music
experiences. I hope you caught the review in

a couple of issues ago for
C.W
Stoneking’s
Gon Boogaloo
album: it’s an
excellent listen and one of my 2014 faves, but
live on stage he really is sensational – I caught
him at Melbourne’s majestic ForumTheatre in
November; the perfect room for him. At the other
end of the scale in terms of local music, I’ve been
hanging out for a new
Black Cab
album since
Call

also awards season. By the time you read this,

The JB Listener
T
his month we’re in Radelaide to talk
spinning black circles with the self
-described vinyl head Steve Cox.
“This started when we put some crates of
vinyl out on trestle tables. The reaction was out
of control! It sold really fast, so we were soon
able to set up a proper, dedicated vinyl section.“
Cox says the rebirth of the vinyl format in JB Hi
-Fi Adelaide’s centrally located store has been a
no brainer. “It sells itself. It’s great; kids just come
in looking for collectables and buy en masse. It’s
become fantastically popular again.”With a
dedicated, established punk and hardcore scene
in Adelaide, it’s unsurprising that releases from
Parkway Drive andThe Amity Affliction have done
well. “
Chasing Ghosts
has been a strong seller,
and so has the reissue of
Youngblood
,“ says Cox.
“And in the heavier vein, we’ve also done well
with all the Rage Against the Machine reissues.
And, the new Slipknot album sold out on vinyl!”
Classic rock seems to thrive on vinyl everywhere,
and the Adelaide store is no exception. The
recent Led Zeppelin reissues – with
Houses of the
Holy
and
Led Zeppelin IV
being the latest two –
have flown out the door, and the store’s top seller
on vinyl in the last year has been the reissue of
INXS’s 1987 classic
Kick
. New contemporary
releases do well too, with the new P!nk/Dallas
Green project You + Me easily disappearing out
the door, along with Lorde’s
Pure Heroine
and the
last couple of albums byThe National. “The other
thing that does well is the ‘back to black’ range of
180 gram vinyl for audiophiles,” says Cox .“Look
for the gold sticker!”
