LAW-2087 Performance Metrics for Small Law Firms:
Principles of Modern Data Management
Mr. Jared Correia,
2 credits day; 2 credits evening.
WEB-Web course-Courses for which more than one-third of the information is online. Students
must have completed 28 credits to enroll in a web course. No more than 15 credits of web
courses may be counted toward the JD.
Law firms have always trafficked in data; but, the modern law practice is more inundated than
ever before. The prevalence of electronic data, and the proliferation of media by which to store
and secure it, has resulted in a sea change in the way that attorneys practice -- the law office of
2006 would be almost unrecognizable today.
This course will focus on data management in the modern, small law firm, including the
potential effect of data analytics on several aspects of practice management. Initial consideration
will focus on the sorts of data lawyers generally maintain, and how they store it. Next, an
overview will be provided of the various obligations (including state and federal laws and ethics
rules) that law firms must meet in securing data. Finally, a review will be undertaken of
traditional KPIs (key performance indicators) used in the legal field, along with an analysis of
why small law firms have not embraced data analysis. The fun begins at the end, when we will
consider how to develop reasonable performance metrics for small law firms, the tools that could
effectuate those and also broach the subject of how to popularize data-centric management in
small law firms
