Sector Outlook

Recruitment is a key function of any HR depar tment as companies

seek to attract high calibre candidates to their business. People

are a company’s biggest asset and as such, many companies will

have their own recruitment teams as they source the best talent.

For operational reasons other industries may choose to outsource

this work to recruitment companies to act as agents in finding the

candidates they want.

Over 100,000 people work in this fast paced, dynamic and growing

sector. In the last year the industry saw sales of £31.5 billion and

an increase of 9% on the previous year with average sales per

consultant reaching £93,000. The most revenue comes from

recruiting IT, Engineering/Technical roles and managerial positions.

Recruiters can be found operating in every industry sector

supplying temporary and permanent contract positions.

Recruiters need to have a strong sales mentality, self-confidence,

tenacity, an ability to network, build rappor t and meet key

per formance targets. The industry needs individuals who can

organise their work load, manage data, and develop a technical

knowledge of the industry. The hours are long but come with

financial rewards for those who succeed. The sector offers work

based qualifications and graduate programmes in the larger

companies. Job vacancies can be found with recruiters such

as Ranstad, Adecco, Reed, Page and Hays but there may be

oppor tunities with smaller operations or looking through

specialist recruitment web sites.
