Sector Outlook

Employment oppor tunities within airpor ts are generally set to rise

although vacancies for some roles may plateau over the next couple

of years before becoming more readily available. The airpor t industry

offers a variety of vacancies in areas as diverse as operations,

commercial duties, finance, human resources and business services.

What’s more, recent government investment has helped the sector to

stabilise and there is now a greater demand for permanent staff.

Heathrow Airpor t, for example, is one of the largest employment sites

in the United Kingdom with over 76, 600 people working within the

airpor t boundary. As with other airpor ts, it also generates employment

oppor tunities elsewhere at a local, regional and national level within

its supply chain.

Recruitment personnel are keen to raise awareness of airpor t careers

and aim to employ the right candidate through either graduate or

apprenticeship programmes. To get an idea of the variety of jobs available

within the airpor t industry consider the following vacancies currently

being adver tised by the major airpor ts across the UK: aviation security

officer, airfield ground lighting technician, engineering apprentice, airpor t

despatcher, aircraft groomer, expor t clerk, senior chef de par tie, airline

catering delivery driver, beauty therapist, fashion and lifestyle manager,

sales assistant, freelance quantity surveyor, commercial co-ordinator,

project analyst, office manager, HR repor ting specialist and supply

chain manager; the list goes on.

The future is bright for the industry with more people travelling each

year and a new runway planned for the South East by 2030.
