Prior to the Great War he held a commission

in the Territorials and enlisted at the outbreak

of the war with the Royal Army Medical

Corps, attached to the 1st East Anglian Field

Ambulance, serving throughout the Gallipoli

Campaign with the 29th Division. He was later

transferred to France and worked in the Casualty

Clearing Zone, first as an anaesthetist and then

as a surgeon, reaching Captain’s rank. After the

war ended, he continued in general practice at

Leiston and then Holbrook, where he became

Medical Officer to the village’s Royal Naval

Hospital. He died in March 1937, aged 54.

Ella never married, and lived with her sister

in Beaconsfield. She kept all of Bertie’s letters

in a Victorian writing case in the attic, where

they were found, over 100 years after they

were first written.
