Human Rights and Constitutional Law

JAMES O'REILLY (EDITOR)

This is a collection of twenty-two essays written

by distinguished international jurists in honour of

Brian Walsh, a judge of the European Court of

Human Rights and a former judge of the Irish

Supreme Court, and one of the most

distinguished Irish jurists of this century.

The central themes of the essays are human

rights, constitutional law and European

Community law. Aspects of the American

Constitution are considered along with the

problems of judicial review and individual rights

under a written constitution. Other articles focus

on the European Court of Human Rights - under

such headings as access to the Court,

fundamental rights and the competence of

national states, and extradition.

Several of the contributors examine European

Community law - including the potential for

stress with State law, the protection of human

rights in the Member States, and the free

movement of persons within the community.
