Summary
Systematic safety integrity is an important contributor to overall safety integrity. The term “Systematic
Capability” allows us to clearly express the suitability of a particular device for use in a SIF of a given
SIL level from the standpoint of systematic safety integrity.
In achieving systematic capability the techniques and measures used by SIS vendors lead to features
being incorporated into their products which can help integrators and end users avoid and control
systematic failures later in the SIS Lifecycle.
Systematic capability needs to be taken into account when selecting devices or elements for a SIF.
A trend toward digitalisation promises tools to further reduce systematic failures throughout all stages
of the lifecycle by use of a more integrated approach to engineering and operation.
