This club was organized in Fe bruary, 1954,
with Margaret Fahlstrom (56 ) as president;
Mary Cordoza (' 56), vice pres ident; Ann
Phillips ('57), secretary-tr easu rer. Three trips
— to Bird Rock, Sc ripp s' Ins titu te of Ocean
ography, andPalomar — furni shed numerous
specimens for the science department , which
the students themse lves classified and placed
on exhibition. At one of t he regula r meetings
of the club, Dr. John L. Feldman, M.D., spoke
on th e earand its disorders . At ano thermeet
ing Dr. McNeally, biochemi st of Kelco Com
pany , showed coloredmovies of de ep sea life
and lect ured on kelp and its chemical proper
ties. The marine biology field trips were under
the guidance of Commander Hendrix of
Scripp's Institu te of Oceanography and the
specialists he chose to instruct the students
of ti de pool life. AMission Bay field tr ip was
led by Mr. Lit tlepage of the San Diego
Natura l History Museum. And t he climactic
event of the year was the gift of a mineral
collection from Kathleen McGonigle ('5 4) .
This collection was p repa red by an engineer
in her father's manganese mine. In the sum
mer of1954, work and play were fused, when
Mr. H. L. Benbough took Science Club mem
bers to the Coronado Islands onhis yacht.
In 1954-55 Margare t Fahlstrom, Beth Ann
Smith and Carol Riddell, all of the class of
'56, hea ded the Science Club.Striving to im
prove their exhibitions, club members made
several field trips to Bird Rock (under the
guidance of Dr. Colon Hough, marine bio
chemis t), Borrego Desert, Dana Landing,
and Scripps. The freshmen, under the leader
ship of Sharon Smith ( '58) , presented "Scien
tific Conferences." Two lectures onastronomy
— one by Donna Kopp ('58) and anothe r by
the astronomer RudolphLippert, centered on
