1949 (13 Mar.) An air mail cover from Shanghai reg. to USA, on reverse, bearing Gold Yuan

SYS Dah Tung print. $100 in pair, $500 single and block of 4, $1,000 block of 6 and block

of 8, and Gold Yuan Parcel Post surcharged $500 on $5,000 in pair, both tied by bilingual

‘SHANGHAI’ cds, ‘SAN FRANCISCO/25.3.49’, ‘BALTIMORE/26.3.49’ arrival cds, on

front with ‘Passed Free/U.S.Customs/at Baltimore,Md.’ oval cancel in violet, ‘Letter Package/

Collect Ten Cents’ in two violet straight lines. Since the envelope was mailed at the old postal

rate on the first day of the new international rate which was increased from Gold Yuan $17,700

to $33,500 for an international registered airmail letter between 110 and 120g, however it was

untaxed and accepted at the old rate. This cover is what some people refer to as a ‘grace period’

cover, some toning. Photo

Parcel Post surcharged $1,0000 on $10,000 block of 24, bottom left stamp damaged, other

side with a single stamp, block 4 and block of 12, each tied by char. ‘NINGHAI’ cds. A nice

surcharged on revenue stamps, $3 on $50 x 8, total value $24.00, tied by char. ‘HINGAN’ cds,

with bilingual ‘SHANGHAI/5.3.49’ cds arrival cds. The $25 Domestic rate was effective from

1949 (Apr.) A wrapper sent from Shanghai to England, bearing SYS Shanghai Dah Tung flat

plate print $100 yellow brown, Gold Yuan surcharged on revenue stamps, $200 on $50 blue

and $2,000 on $300 green in pair, total rate $4,300. This postage rate was valid from 1st April

to 10th April 1949 as international air mail service, after 11th April 1949, the international air

mail postage rate was increased to $12,600, very fine. Photo
