This was an improvised form of franking parcels. The initials are those of A.S. Hamilton, the postmaster who made the surcharge

at the request of the manager of the local coal company. These stamps were not sold at the post office, but were handed directly to

the manager.

only recorded example of this variety. RPS certificate No 16,778 not present. Unlisted in SG, listed in Scott (Sc 26a) but unpriced.

On 28 August 1883 De La Rue sent a series of 2 cents stamps, all perforated 12, to suggest new colours

which would fit in with the colour scheme laid down by the International Postal Convention. This proof was

used to illustrate the proposed colour for the 8 cents. Photo
