Internships can be difficult to obtain because there are
numerous other people in the world who are interested in the
same field as you. In the summer of 2013, the Jacksonville
Jaguars received more than 100 applications for their training-
camp internships. If you are willing to become an intern and
work in a front office for a summer, be persistent. Do not give up
after the first or second “no.”
First Steps
Begin by having an idea of what you are trying to accomplish.
If you are in high school or college and are looking for six to
eight weeks of a summer internship, start searching as soon as
possible. Even if summer is eight or nine months away, that is a
good time to begin reaching out to teams.
Call the team and find out who makes the hiring decisions.
Ask for the spelling of their names and titles. Double-check this
information on the Internet. If your information does not match,
call the team back and again request the information. There
is nothing worse than spelling someone’s name incorrectly,
especially in your first letter or email. Also, using the correct title
is a sign of respect. If you are a hard worker and make sure you
have the facts correct, you are more likely to get hired.
