PVC and
CPVC double
containment
Certain environments demand fail-safe
systems: no leaks, no risk. Recognising
the complexity of design and installation
for demanding double containment
applications, IPEX has a division
dedicated to the design, production
and installation of double containment
systems.
The IPEX family of double containment
systems includes Guardian
TM
PVC and
CPVC, and Clear-Guard
TM
PVC pressure
and drainage systems, CustomGuard
®
FRP and metal pressure systems,
Encase
TM
PolyPro drainage systems,
and Centra-Guard
TM
and PAL-AT leak
detection systems.
Safety and environmental concerns
are priorities on today’s industrial
agenda. Reduction of emissions,
energy conservation and prevention of
ground water contamination are some
of the areas where regulations are
increasingly defining an important line
between utilisation and exploitation of
resources. For most common chemical-
waste or process applications, IPEX
offers systems that are simple, but use
advanced technologies. These systems
utilise pre-assembled components that
ensure reliability, ease of installation,
fewer joints, and quick delivery. With
material choices that include Xirtec
®
140
PVC, Corzan
®
CPVC, flame and non-
flame retardant PP, the Guardian
and Encase systems can handle the
majority of applications.

Triple wall PP pipe
Italiana Corrugati SpA has developed
TECH3, a triple wall polypropylene pipe
with high mechanical characteristics
and high reliability of sealing joints. This
technique has been implemented in
order to meet the needs of an increased
tolerance concerning negligence
in laying and operating efficiency in
presence of groundwater.
PP belongs to the family of polyolefins
– a material that is not composed by
chlorine molecule and is recyclable
without harm to the environment.
Polyolefins are advantageous in terms
of durability (abrasion and chemical
resistance) and impact resistance. The
construction and testing standard of
TECH3 pipes is in compliance with EN
13476-2. The wall structure is triple-
layer, and smooth inside and outside.
This structure allows rigidity, increasing
both axial and annular (≥18kN/m
2
). It
safeguards the pipeline from lying with
any point loading on the outer surface
(stones and rocks), and from accidental
shocks (falls, picks, etc), and the smooth
surface interacts uniformly with the soil
around the pipe.
Junctions are realised by a socket (or
coupling on request), and the socket
is equipped with two pre-installed
gaskets. Each seal is equipped with an
internal anti-upsetting rigid ring, capable
of preventing seal leakage from the seat
during the insertion of the spigot.
When the junction is complete there
will be a volume of air between the two
gaskets. A rubber valve fitted to the
socket and the device (manual pump)
makes it possible to quickly and easily
pre-test the tightness of the connection,
by blowing air in pressure between the
two seals, before backfilling.
TECH3 pipe sockets are longer than
the minimum values required by the
standard, because they are designed to
ensure greater tightness capacity and
also the absorption of linear thermal
expansion of the 6m pipe length when
installed externally (eg under bridges),
for temperatures from -10 to +40°C.
This enables better performance
regarding the tightness value in case of
ring deformation of the socket up to 8-9
per cent.
