Rating Law: The Uniform

Business Rate

By P.

Askham and

D.

Mackmin,

London, Sweet & Maxwell; 1995

xxix + 241pp; £50.00; hardback.

This brief notice is intended us an

introduction to the above hook on

English rating law for interested

practitioners.

The aim of the hook is to present the

current law and practice in simple

terms to cover both theory and

practice. Rating law is relatively

specialised and the authors state that

in accepting a client's instructions

lawyers will recognise their own

limitations of knowledge and

experience and refer where necessary

to the rating expert. The purpose of

this book is to provide the

surveyor and lawyer with a general

overview of the topic, to cover

most aspects of principle but to stop

short of endeavouring to cover the

detail of the subject required by the

specialist. The contents includc

sections on the principles of

valuation, the liability for rates,

methods of assessment, assessment of

retail and commercial property,

industrial property, plant and

machinery, mineral hereditaments,

assessment of licensed premises,

garage and service stations, public

utility undertakings and community

properties.

Although dealing specifically with

English law, Irish practitioners

involved in rating law may find

some comparative references of use

and interest.
