The water pump has become an
important routine replacement item
largely because it is a part of the
timing belt drive system. Vehicle
manufacturers and timing belt suppliers
both recommend replacing the water
pump plus the tensioner and idler
pulleys during the belt change service
to help ensure that all components
achieve their optimum life expectancy.
Effectively, the water pump is an
important rolling element of the
primary drive system, and fitting a new
timing belt to either a worn pump or
damaged pulley will obviously lead to
premature failure and the possibility of
major engine damage. Also, it is more
cost-effective to invest in a new water
pump when the timing belt system is
replaced.
