Howl & Whisper

A

s we always like to say around this time of

the year, it’s New Zealand Music Month

every month at JB Hi-Fi, not just in May.

Of course, it’s always good to see homegrown

music getting a bit of extra profile, so if you are a

little behind on local releases, we suggest you

check out our great selection. A

good place to start would be the

Taite Music Prize nominees;

Silicon’s debut

Personal

Computer

was the deserved

winner last month, but if you

haven’t done so already, we

recommend you also check out

the other shortlisted albums –

Princess Chelsea, SJD,

Unknown Mortal Orchestra,

MarlonWilliams, Phoenix

Foundation and Nadia Reid – all

of which testify to both the

quality and diversity of our local

scene.

However, this month we would like to look ahead

to a couple of big homegrown albums due out next

month. First up is Ladyhawke’s long awaited third

release

WildThings

on June 3, the follow-up to her

2012 hit

Anxiety

. She explains the big gap between

albums is because she never wants to release

anything that she is not proud of – the intervening

years saw her scrap an entire album – so there is an

excellent chance it will live up to the high standards

she has set with her first two records.

Ladyhawke – AKA Pip Brown – has also indicated

that

WildThings

will be more “poppy and synthy,”

so it will be interesting to see how it matches up

to another highly anticipated

album of electro-pop: Broods’

sophomore set

Conscious

, which

is due in-store on June 24.

The award-winning duo –

siblings Georgia and Caleb Nott –

are promising a tougher, punchier

sound this time around and the

involvement once again of Lorde

collaborator Joel Little means this

could be their breakout album

internationally.

Speaking of which... we’re

afraid we don’t have any new

updates on whether New

Zealand’s biggest pop star will

release her second album in 2016. Lorde has

apparently been hard at work on the new record

with the likes of Jack Antonoff (Taylor Swift’s

1989

),

and even has a title – but is still yet to announce a

release date for it. Fingers crossed…
