Animated movies are all light and fluffy fare for kids,
yeah? No! That’s a load of phooey, especially when Laika
exists. The US animation studio responsible for
Coraline
and
ParaNorman
always look on the dark side of life
(insert whistles here), and they continue this with the
remarkable Japanese-set tale of young Kubo. How dark
is it? Well, his two aunts and grandpa took his left eye
when he was a mere bub. He can’t stay out after sunset
for fear that they’ll return for his other peeper. Then
there’s the kid trying to communicate with his dead
samurai warrior dad, subsequent aunt wrath against his mother, and a
survival quest to find his father’s magic armour. Stunning in absolutely
every sense (although obviously not for younger kids), this stop-motion
wonder just might dethrone Disney/Pixar come Oscar time.

That Scrat and his blasted acorns! While trying to
bury his latest conquest he activates an abandoned
alien craft and ends up hurtling into the cosmos.
Hey, at least we’ll finally be safe from his propensity
for causing havoc, right? Wrong! His intergalactic
shenanigans inadvertently send asteroids hurtling
straight towards – you guessed it – Earth. Naturally our
ever-growing herd, led by Manny, Diego and Sid, are
clueless as to what they’ll soon be in for, as they deal
with everyday dramas from the genuine to the stupid
(you can guess who’s responsible for the latter). Then some asteroids
hit, and the herd are lucky to escape. Weasel Buck believes a stone
pillar has the answer – to save Earth they need to visit the site of a
previous asteroid hit. Cue one event-filled ‘road’ trip!
