Discovering Luxembourg
Some communes may have specific private electricity providers. Large families with three or
more children may be entitled to electricity, water, and gas discounts. To activate your utility
accounts via phone, the provider will need: meter number, reading, move-in date. It can be
useful to have the name of the landlord and previous tenant if applicable.
The provider will then send you the contract to sign via post or email. For assistance with
account set-up, please contact your Dwellworks Consultant. Your Consultant can also
provide a list of service providers outside of Luxembourg City. Note that some landlords will
include certain utilities under “additional charges/fees” and will monitor usage throughout the
year.
Water

Water is generally provided by the Service des Eaux of the Commune. Water consumption
is always linked to the name of the property owner who receives the bills quarterly. If you are
renting a house, the landlord may want to transfer the account to your name so water
consumption can be billed directly to you. To get connected to the local office, contact the
Town Hall/municipality office.
Garbage
Each household is provided with one black garbage bin for general waste and one blue bin
for paper. Is some communities, each house is also provided with a green waste bin for
garden waste or compostable materials. Luxembourg still follows a glass return policy where
bottles can be returned to any store that sells that product for a refund.
Many towns use a pay per use system. Bins are equipped with a bar code or microchip that
is scanned to determine charges. Charges are determined by the weight of the bin or the
number of times the bin is emptied. Collections are done once a week and a yearly schedule
can be found at the local Municipal office or online.
