Chapter Three: Using Coal

In addition to the leftovers from coal mining itself, called spoil or gob, coal

preparation produces great quantities of wastes, with names such as tailings,

middlings, and slurry. These have to be safely recycled or disposed, adding to coal’s

cost and environmental problems.
