Reading for the Road
By Marcella Gauthier #12371
Marcella has a lifelong love of reading. She says she can’t remember anything before she could read, and writing is her second love. Her first long story,
about a girl and her hero horse, was written when she was only 12 years old. She has worked as a technical writer for over 40 years, and, when she can,
she escapes on a road trip in her 1978 classic Airstream trailer.
This issue’s assortment of books includes a technical guide
about new lighting systems for your RV, and two books
about travel trips, the first about an RV trip to Alaska, the
other the story about a family’s road trip around America.
In conclusion, I feature a book of interviews with older
Americans on the lessons they’ve learned on their journey
through life.
The ABCs of L E Ds: Installing and Replacing Light
Sources in Your RV
Robert G. Lowe • Publisher:
www.RV-PartsPlus.com 2015
• 877-266-5398 • ISBN: 978-0-9939561-0-2 • E-book: $3.99
Rob Lowe has a wonderful Website
( www.RV-PartsPlus. com ) with valuable information and products specifically
designed for the RV market. Especially interesting is his blog
discussing the interactions of chassis/starting and coach/
house batteries. This e-book, at an incredibly low price of
$3.99, is an absolutely invaluable source of information to
assist you in installing LED lights in your RV. With great
illustrations explaining the ben-
efits of LEDs, Rob shows, and
explains, what lighting systems
you may already have in your
rig and how to replace them with
efficient, long-life LEDs. LEDs
use 10 percent of the power
consumption of ordinary lights.
With the price of LEDs drop-
ping, the savings in initial costs
and energy consumption is quite
significant. The book has easy-to-follow instructions that
make installing the lights quick and reasonably effortless.
RVing to the Land of the Midnight Sun: Washing-
ton State to Alaska
Jim Hendrickson #112617 • Publisher: Smashwords.com
2015 • ISBN: 978-1311626035 • Download: $3.99
This is another travel book
by Jim Hendrickson, whose
travel books I reviewed about
a year ago. Jim is an adven-
turer to the max. This time
he is traveling from his home
in the Pacific Northwest as
far north into Alaska as he
can go with only a car and a
small travel trailer. His final
destination of Prudhoe Bay is
accomplished in the compa-
ny of three other travelers,
a Chinese programmer for
Google from San Francisco,
a lady from Philadelphia and
her friend, Doreen, from Wales, both ladies in
their 80s and friends since childhood. Traveling
with an experienced guide in a van, at the Arctic
Circle they held a brief ceremony of stepping
over the line complete with celebratory slices of
chocolate cake. Jim’s descriptions of places visit-
ed and people met along the way are in his usual
fashion, very well-described. You feel as though
you are along for the ride. This book could also
serve as a guide in planning future trips to Alaska.
