East County Detention Center “Green Light”
The 1,626-bed East County Detention Center (ECDC) received the “green
light” from the State last month, paving the way for construction to begin
on the new 516,000 square foot detention facility on the site of the
existing Indio Jail. The added beds will reduce the impacts of early inmate
releases and improve safety in the local community with its modern,
efficient and secure design. The $330 million project is being funded
through a combination of county bond funds and a $100 million funding
program (essentially a grant) from the State of California.
Other capital projects funded through the 30-year bond include a parking
structure, Emergency Operations Centers in Indio and Riverside,
classrooms at the Ben Clark Training Center, courtrooms at the Larson
Justice Center in Indio
and at the Southwest
Justice Center in
French Valley, and a
laundry expansion at
the Larry D. Smith
Correctional Facility in
Banning.
