The project comprised four main

components: (i) Irrigation Development;

(ii) Watershed Management; (iii) Capacity

Building; and (iv) Project Coordination

and Management. The project aimed at

harnessing the water resources of the

Koga River to irrigate 6 000 ha of the

command area, as well as to improve

rain-fed agriculture, forestry, livestock,

soil conservation, water and sanitation

on some 22 000 ha catchment area. The

overall sector goal of the project was to

contribute towards poverty reduction

among smallholders through improvement

in food security in the region in particular

and the country as a whole, consistent with

the government’s policies of sustainable

environment and agricultural development.

The specific objective of the project was

to improve agricultural production in the

catchment and command areas of the Koga

River valley in a sustainable manner

(land rehabilitation), restore biodiversity

and increase food security

Farmers are less vulnerable to climate-

related stress and shocks in the

watersheds. There is improved food

security. 1220 ha of land was rehabilitated

for 3044 families. Household safety nets

strengthened through on-farm income

generating activities
