Discovering Costa Rica

Utilities

Gas

Many stoves in Costa Rica require propane tanks, which are available at supermarkets and

local suppliers. These tanks come in various sizes, and you can pick them up yourself or

arrange for delivery.

Electricity

In Costa Rica the electric company ICE provides electricity to approximately 95% of the country.

The cost of electricity averages about $20-30 USD per month for a modest home. To help keep

costs down, many Costas Rican households use on-demand water heaters and energy-saving

appliances.

Water

Almost all homes in Costa Rica are supplied treated water directly from a municipal water

supply. A&A (Acueductos & Alcantarillados) monitors each house’s water meter and charges

accordingly; most bills come to roughly $5-10 USD per month. Costa Ricans traditionally

conserve water with more efficient appliances, and many are accustomed to using cold water

for everything, although newer homes are now using hot water tanks that can supply a constant

stream of hot water.

Garbage

Most urban areas offer standard garbage removal services. While some municipalities have

established recycling programs, it is not a national requirement.
