VISIT PORTLAND / 75

MAINE HIGHLANDS

Adventure is in the heart of Maine—

literally. This central region north of Greater

Portland invites you to unwind, unplug,

and choose the path less traveled. It might

be your desire to reach the northernmost

point of the Appalachian Trail by scaling

Mt. Katahdin in majestic Baxter State Park,

or fishing in 40-mile long Moosehead Lake

renowned for its landlocked salmon, brook

trout, and togue. If rafting, snowmobiling,

and interacting with Maine wildlife is more

to your liking, this expanse of wilderness

offers some of the most exciting outdoor

activities of all. Bangor, the area’s

commercial and cultural hub, features world-

class concerts and events on its riverfront.

MAINE LAKES + MOUNTAINS

Western Maine is a year-round recreational

destination combining family-friendly non-

stop adventure with lazy, idyllic comfort!

Enjoy some of the best golfing and snow

sports in the East—with Rangeley’s

Snodeo not to be missed. Or choose to

canoe, kayak, and chill out on hundreds

of crystal-clear rivers and glacial lakes.

Experience moose up close in the safety

of a preserve or from a wilderness cabin.

Steeped in history and pop culture, visit

world-famous sites including Poland Spring

and Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village. The

urban center of Lewiston-Auburn offers fine

dining, entertainment, and the annual Great

Falls Balloon Festival.

Listings on the following pages give you some

great ways to explore the regions beyond and

nearby Greater Portland.
