The concept of a measurand

It is understood that the

result of the measurement

including all required

corrections is the

best estimate

of the value of the measurand.

However, since the measurand cannot be completely specified without an

infinite

amount of information, the result of a measurement is only an

approximation

or

estimate

of the value of the measurand.

It means: All possible outcomes of a measurement are subjected to a

probability distribution

.

Thus the estimate of the value of the measurand is

complete only

when it is

accompanied by a statement of the

uncertainty of that estimate
