MEETINGS OF THE COUNCIL.
8th April.
Twenty-three members present.
The late Mr. F. M. J. Lyons.
A resolution was passed expressing the
deep regret of the Council at the death of
Mr. F. M. J. Lyons, recently a member of
the Council, and conveying to Mrs. Lyons
and his family the sympathy of the Council
in their bereavement.
Debating Society.
A report was adopted from a special com–
mittee of the Council appointed to confer
with a deputation of members of
the
Solicitors Apprentices' Debating Society.
The report recommended better financial
provision being made from the funds of the
Law Society for the working of the Debating
Society, and the recommendation has been
approved by the Council.

Special Examiner.
A letter was read from Mr. Frank V.
Gordon
tendering his resignation of
the
office of Special Examiner to the Society
for
the Preliminary Examination.
The
Council in accepting his resignation desired
that its appreciation of the services rendered
by Mr. Gordon to the Society as Special
Examiner for thirty years past be conveyed
to him.
Library Catalogue.
The tender of Alex. Thorn and Co., Ltd.,
for printing one
thousand copies of
a
catalogue of the books contained in the
Society's Library was accepted.
Local Government.
An advertisement issued by the Local
Appointments Commission inviting applica–
tions from Solicitors between the ages of 25
and 40 years for the appointment of the
combined office of Clerk and Solicitor to the
Athlone District Council, whole
time, per–
manent, and pensionable, at salary of £300
per annum, rising by £10 yearly to a maximum
of £400 yearly, was
considered by
the
Council, and
the
following resolution was
passed:
" The Council having considered the
terms and conditions under which members
of the Solicitors' profession are invited to
make application to the Local Appoint–
ments Commission for the appointment of
Clerk and Solicitor to the Athlone Urban
District Council, expresses its opinion that
both the initial and maximum salaries
offered for the combined offices are wholly
unreasonable and inadequate. The Council
requests the Minister for Local Govern–
ment and Public Health to receive at an
early date a deputation from the Council
in reference to this matter."
