WELCOME

When I first arrived in Melbourne, I temporarily bunked out east while

I found my bearings (and a job). Eager to connect with new music, I

discovered a small, yellow-painted shop called JB Hi-Fi on Whitehorse

Road, Nunawading (this particular store has since been replaced with

an upgraded model). I made a beeline for the door after spotting a sign

that read ‘CDs’ and entered what turned out to be an Aladdin’s Cave,

where I picked up rare a Spacemen 3 release and an Unkle Japanese

import. Impressed, I became a regular there. One of the staff members

told me the manager would occasionally throw in a discounted copy

of an album amongst the full priced versions, encouraging the ‘hunt’.

The breadth of range synonymous with JB Hi-Fi stores meant hunting

season was all year round, and whether I was searching for music,

games or movies, the possibility of uncovering an undiscovered gem

was part of the allure of shopping at JB. JB Hi-Fi chief executive Richard

Murray recently confirmed the company’s ongoing support for physical

media, and it’s hard to imagine a JB store without it. It’s entrenched

in JB Hi-Fi’s heritage, an integral part of the retail experience, and

continues to drive this particular ‘hunter’ in-store, week-in-week-out.

You just never know what you might unearth.
