music lovers! This
month I've seen all musical creatures
great and small from secret
underground club shows to massive stadium
extravaganzas. Back in February I caught
The

– if you're new to them, they're from
Liverpool, not Australia – and they're

's cover stars this month. I
saw them at a 'secret' Melbourne
gig, showcasing new songs from
the
Glitterbug
album. They were
superb, and it was great to see a
band one would usuallly see in a
large-scale setting in an intimate
one. Before she appeared on

Nigerian musician Fela Kuti was the great originator of Afro Beat, a strident protest music that flowed with irresistable rhythms. Finding Fela presents a look at the legend's life and unseen live performances. Thanks to Madman, we have three copies to give away. Finding Fela DVDOn the

imagine sitting on the front steps as your best
mate spins you a yarn. This pal just happens
to have a guitar and make records. But don't
get me wrong: she's no balladeer – live, she's
plenty powerful. At the other end of the
spectrum I saw
Foo Fighters

TV show if you haven't already, it's
out on DVD/Blu-ray this month),
checked out
Imagine Dragons
showcasing

always excellent live, and caught
up with clever young Brits

P
ete Gauci (right) has worked at JB Hi-Fi’s flagship
store in Bourke St, Melbourne since 2008. It’s one
of the few JB Hi-Fi stores that stocked vinyl from day
one, expanding the availability of sacred black plastic as
demand has climbed steadily again in recent years. When
we caught up with Gauci last month he was hard at work,
unpacking a brand new shipment of records to get onto
the shelves. Working an inner city store, Pete finds the
demand both consistent and varied, with new releases
by Pond, Alt-J and D’Angelo all selling well. But he says
there’s plenty of room for old
and
new. “The Royal
Blood album is almost our best seller weekly, and it was
doing well even before they played Laneway. But we’re
also re-ordering David Bowie’s recent greatest hits set
Nothing has Changed
every week; that’s done really well.
And, the last two reissues by My Chemical Romance
have done really well too.” However sometimes it’s the
evergreens that just keep on giving, and Pete says this
is the case with the recent re-release of Led Zeppelin’s
Physical Graffiti.
“The artwork means it’s the ultimate
Led Zeppelin album to have on vinyl,” he says, referring
to the famous cover depicting the New York tenement
building with inter-changable cardboard window shutters.
Don’t forget, you can always order hard-to-find
vinyl via the JB Hi-Fi website. See right!
