ey all you

music
lovers, I'm back from
balmy Barcelona (don't be
too jealous), and aside from
escaping the winter I managed to
catch a set by the great Modfather
himself,
PaulWeller
, which was
absolutely fantastic. From there it
was straight on to Splendour in the
Grass, where some of our brightest
Aussie acts shined (through a few
somber clouds), and I got myself
along to several Melbourne
sideshows as well. Folk-rockers
Boy & Bear
and atmospheric
charmers
Holy Holy
both delivered
in spades, but the most luminous of
all were
Tame Impala
, proffering a
completely immersive experience
which included many of those
freshly pressed tunes from their
latest dreamy album
Currents
.
Other highlights of the festival
included beloved
Florence + the
Machine
, surf cats
Best Coast
,
Icelandic indie-pop act
Of Monsters
and Men
, and of course the
inimitable
Mark Ronson
(whose
extraordinary backing band included
Australian soul singer Ella
Thompson, of The Bamboos). Upon
returning to Melbourne I almost
immediately got to see
Blur
a
second time (after their headlining
performance at the festival), in their
sideshow at Melbourne's Rod Laver
Arena; Damon Albarn was suitably
kooky as always, and in addition to
the hits we heard several tracks
from new release
The Magic Whip
,
which translated splendidly live.
Coming up, I'm hanging to see
those wild poly-rhythmic neo-soul
idols
Hiatus Kaiyote
; they're
playing at Howler in Melbourne on
August 14. The Grammy Award-
nominees are spruiking their
second album
Choose Your
Weapon
, which came out a few
months ago and totally bewitched
my ears. I'll let you know next time
exactly how impressive
frontwoman Nai Palm was, so until
then, keep your head in the music!

C
raigos has been working
within the music industry
since he was 15, so he's
had "a good 20-odd years" to
build his rather impressive
vinyl collection. As music co-
cordinator of the Marion store
in South Australia, Craigos is
particularly stoked that they'll
soon be carrying a full vinyl
catalogue – classics as well
as fresh LPs every week.
"It's pretty exciting to see the
format coming back," he says.
"People appreciate the artwork,
the sound, everything about it!"
The newTame Impala album
Currents
– which has been
shipped on vinyl to every single
JB store, even those that don't
usually stock LPs – is going
like hotcakes at Marion, and
Craigos reckons it'll remain so
well into Christmas. "There're
still quite a few cool things to
come out this year that haven't
been announced, but I'm
particularly looking forward to
the new Iron Maiden album,"
he adds. Recent releases he's
picked up for his personal
cache include Everything
Everything's
Get to Heaven
,
and the self-titled debut from
Franz Ferdinand/Sparks outfit

Don’t forget, you can always order hard-to-find vinyl via the JB Hi-Fi website.
Looking sharp and getting punch-
happy: the Sharpie subculture of
'70s Oz had so much more going
on. It's been immortalised with
loving fervour in an absolutely
vicious double CD and booklet of
snaps: we've got 5 to give away,
thanks to Festival/Warner!
