to fear us. We knew he was
just a kid too. My wife went
over to his house and begged
him to come over and visit
our son. But he said that
he had homework to finish.
He moved away after a few
months, and we never saw
him again. Until last week,
when he stepped in to my
taxi.
He got in and sat right behind
me, so maybe he didn’t
recognize my face. Or maybe
he did see me, and he sat
back there so he wouldn’t
have to talk to me. I could
see him in the rear view
mirror and I knew it was him
right away. Even though so
many years have passed, and
he isn’t a kid anymore, I still
recognize him. His eyebrows
were still practically glued
together, just like they were

of being a taxi driver, I know

mommy and daddy, not a
woman. I wondered where

because back in the day, they

name, always borrowing left

there’s no other way I can
