and when we pasted them to the window

we saw the mail lady coming into the yard.

We dropped the snowflakes and ran to Grandma,

but the mail lady already stood on the threshold,

shaking off snow and smiling:

“It’s a Christmas gift, Maria:

your grandson was born in Moscow.”

And Grandma poured out two small glasses of vodka

and they drank,

and the mail lady hurried off,

because it was already getting dark.

And Vovka and I took tarts

and sat by the window to wait for the star.

And the star appeared.

And, appearing high and far off at the end of the street,

it began to move from house to house

and finally floated in at our gate

and shone under the window.

God Eternal was born

and came to us from Heaven
